And now for a kind word about a city program...

A city official recently took me to task for not balancing criticism of City Hall with praise for what it does right like picking up the garbage and patrolling the streets.

Well, I never thought  doing the job you  were  paid to do was all that praiseworthy but the mail yesterday brought information from the Department of Sanitation that does deserve some notice

It's called Smart Gardening Classes and includes free shade trees and subsidized compost bin sales ($20 for an $80 compost bin) along with classes in recycling and water-wise gardening. The program is available monthly at Griffith Park with special classes at Pierce College on July 19 and Eagle Rock Recreation Center on Sept. 20.

Information is available at www.lacity.org/san or by calling 213-485-2260. There, see I can say something nice if it makes L.A. a greener and better city -- even if it's subsidized by taxpayers.

CLEAN UP CITY HALL

Support the "LA Clean Sweep" campaign to end corruption at City Hall by electing candidates who will serve the public interest -- not special interests. For too long, concerned residents throughout Los Angeles have fought their own separate battles against the powerful forces that run City Hall and control our elected officials. The city's financial crisis, cuts in core services, layoffs of city workers, selling valuable assets, massive subsidies to insiders -- we have reached the point of no return. Only you can save LA. Join the Clean Sweep campaign and come together with people from all over the city to make a difference.
