Come Together LA — Join the Campaign to Clean Up City Hall and Give Everyone a Voice

L.A. Clean Sweep Kick Off, a big hit! from Michael N Cohen on Vimeo.

It was beautiful — the moment of truth when we pushed the button and launched the Clean Sweep campaign to bring all of Los Angeles together to change the political culture, empower every segment of the community and elect better people for a greater city.

Some 200  people gathered Saturday in the heat at the Mayflower Club in North Hollywood to rally behind creating an alternative to failure at City Hall and apathy and defeatism among voters.

A lot of hard work lies ahead that will take the efforts of thousands of people but the enthusiasm Saturday among people who represent political views of the left, right and center, people came from all parts of the city, showed there is a base of committed passionate support for the broad agenda of Clean Sweep (lacleansweep.com)

You can watch the whole program in this video and see how the diverse viewpoints of former Mayor Richard Riordan, South Central Farmers leader Tezozomoc, Laborers Union organizer Gerardo Almeida, Parent Revolution organizer Shirley, former mayoral candidate Walter Moore and Neighborhood Council activists all came together around the need for change and how to achieve it.

There was extensive advance coverage in the media and of the event in the LA Weekly, Daily News and LA Times provided coverage of the event along with several community papers, bloggers and KPCC.

We must move swiftly now to reach out to all parts of the city to get people involved and create opportunities for all candidates preparing to challenge for the even-numbered City Councl seats next March to hone their messages and connect with voters.

They, of course, will be running their own campaigns but Clean Sweep can mobilize volunteers for phone banks and precinct walking and to spread the word on the need for major reforms in how he city does business.

We have a long way to go and it will take the active participation of a lot of people concerned about the future of the city they love.

We need to reinvent LA’s political culture to be open and inclusive and elect people who will put the public interest first, people who are beholden for their election to the voters and not the special interests and their money.

All suggestions are welcome. You can write me at ron@ronkayela.com or go to lacleansweep.com and register to volunteer and become of something important that can make a difference.

You must distance yourself from the racist Walter Moore. He is going to kill this campaign.

i hope you aren’t thinking of voting out cm parks. budget is most critical issue which includes pension reform. parks is only cm who has thorough knowledge and total grasp on entire complex issue. without parks there will be no professor to explain homework to the kids. and this isn’t parks or anyone associated with him or anyone else. just one constituent’s wish. focus all resources on all the other councilmembers.

12:29pm is posting on other blogs the same crap. ENOUGH!!! Mike Trujillo is a laughing stock in the city now that he’s showing his desperation. I can’t think of one council moron who could have gathered that many people on a very hot Saturday to unite for the same vision and that is to clean out city hall. Council members are happy to get 20 people to their meetings. This very successful LA Clean Sweewp launch truly was inspirational and shows that people are ready to work hard and send a very strong message to city hall. All the hate mongers will try and deflect from that message but it isn’t working. There were people from all races yesterday applauding and wanting the same thing, “a new city government that represents them” Great job Ron for being a leader and your committee

I hope Clean Sweep succeeds but the first poster is right, the distraction that Walter Moore brings to the campaign threatens to derail it before it even begins.
Walter has a long history of racist and anti-Latino rants. Ron should have thought about the implications before he brought Walter aboard.

For you Walter Moore naysayers, this isn’t about him. It’s about you. It’s about you wanting to save your City. Because if you don’t do it, no one will.
Take just a few minutes of your precious time and listen to Riordan’s comments about the pension deficit and how it is growing. Then, you will understand better just what you are facing in the future – especially if the status quo remains in power.

Why shouldn’t Walter Moore be there? Thousands of us voted for him & he represents our views. And if mexicans don’t like, tough. This city is being ruined by all these left wing corrupt mexican politicos. And it’s time when somebody will start speaking up the truth. Walter Moore didn’t succeed in beating villar but hopefully another leader will emerge and truly clean the toilet that this city has become.

  7. Anonymous says:

As long as Walter Moore is involved I will not participate.

  8. Anonymous says:

3:52 PM. You probably never were a “participant”. Just vote for whoever’s on the ballot. You clearly are not a “doer”. You get what you give, and your case, you get what you ask for.

WHY are the wackos piling onto Walter Moore’s views on illegal immigration and that video showing how big parts of L A looks like TJ, when that nutcase David Berger, MOORE’s FAR MORE VILE MOUTHED AND RACIST DAVID BERGER AKA RUMPOLE ON MAYOR SAM and under David and numerous names elsewhere, was there as a WALKING BILLBOARD FOR HIS HERO FELLOW REPUBLICAN ANGER MANAGEMENT CLIENT IN WAITING, TRUTANICH! IN FACT HIS NASTINESS IS WHY HE GOT REWARDED WITH A JOB ON TAXPAYER DOLLAR AS “Clown Camen” the “Bully’s” chief deputy- hiliarious in charge of “ethics.”
Isn’t it against their anti-billboard crusade, for Berger to have worn that “Nuch” t-shirt and hat? WALKING HUMAN BILLBOARDS ARE ALSO OUTLAWED HAVEN’T YOU HEARD YET BERGER? No exceptions just because you have no other purpose in life.
The stuff he and Kevin James said together on James’ show ALONE not even counting his wacko appearances on Doug McIntyre, including AFTER the election, are SO MUCH MORE RACIST, HATE-FILLED AND DOWNRIGHT SLANDEROUS THAN WALTER MOORE’S THAT IF ANYONE HEARD THEM THEY’D DEMAND HE BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY AND TRITANCH DISTANCE HIMSELF FROM THESE VIEWS AND ATTITUDES BUT OF COURSE TRITANICH SHARES THE VIEWS OF BERGER AND JAMES, AND IS THE HERO OF THIS AND OTHER TEABAG BLOGS.
So if two people who ARE on the taxpayer rolls AND in positions of power are far more racist than Walter Moore, you are slamming Moore only because he didn’t win? He didn’t have John Thomas’ money and the influence of the L A Slimes behind him but he at least is his own man and while he’s aloof is just trying to preserve the “anglo” way of life in what has always been a slice of Middle Class America, and is unhappy it’s turned into TJ.
His point isn’t to be racist like Berger’s rants who reflects Trutanich, or he wouldn’t have been rewarded with that job as his right hand, but that the Mexicans who come here illegally and have lots of kids and use up our social services. Yet don’t even WANT TO assimilate but create their own tacky towns with garish billboards, ugly garish cement blocks to house their swarms of kids and so on.
Throwing trash into the streets, no respect for our values or culture.
Actually it’s Berger the WALKING BILLBOARD POLITICAL SHOESHINE BOY and the illegals with their tacky signs who have A common CAUSE.
I’m far from pro-illegal immigrant OR a Democrat as you can tell if you’re not totally stupid so don’t call me some Villaraigosa “4th Floor spinner.” I share Moore’s points though wish he made them in a different way.
It’s the HYPOCRISY OF YOU PEOPLE, WHERE YOU GANGBANG ON MOORE WHO’S FAR MORE POLITE THAN BERGER OR TRUTANICH AND FAR SMARTER, WHILE REWARDING THOSE TWO TRULY DANGEROUS POWER-SEIZING CLOWNS WHO ALMOST GOT AWAY WITH AN ILLEGAL END-RUN AROUND THE CITY CHARTER BY ALLYING WITH THEIR IDEOLOGICAL OPPOSTE GIL CEDILLO. The “one Bill Gil” who says it’s racist to deny the “right” to drive to illegals who don’t have licenses or insurance, and are in essence, operating killing machines without a permit. The cause of most hit-and-runs, the ones who don’t pay the fines or tickets they get because no one can find them anyway so WE pay triple in our insurance to make up for it. THESE are the self-serving, opportunistic phonies who will do ANYTHING for personal power.
With a total lack of integrity or coherence or ethics like this, Clean Sweep will be doomed to fail. BY ITS OWN STUPIDITY AND NOT BECAUSE OF WALTER MOORE.

Before I consider volunteering, I’ll wait & see how does Ron & others treat this issue of Walter Moore’s involvement. If Walter is forced to repudiate his views, I’m out. If Walter is forced out to pacify illegals & their supporters, I’m out. And I don’t believe I’m alone. So if this is another one of those politically correct groups, forget it.

Riordan is just trying to find a way back into power by jumping onto the caboose of the “Runaway Pensions” Train when HE is chief among those who gave cops and firefighters an increase to a full 90% retirement pension (from 70%) and did nothing to improve the situation while he had power as Mayor. Ron’s comments to the Daily News were that Latino leaders and all are welcome as long as they are willing to stand upto developers, then he has Riordan as keynote speaker?
Riordan had his chance at a time when the Mayor had a lot MORE power than this one does. Who is actually going against his own union upbringing in trying to talk the unions into negotiating. But is waffling like the rest of the Council, this way and that, and they ended up firing the library workers and teaching assistants who don’t have strong unions!
Parks is another hypocrite – benefiting from that huge hike in police pensions, getting hundreds of thousands of dollars/ year on top of his giant salary, and he isn’t wanting to give that back or negotiate cop or firefighter pensions back down to the 50% we’d need to keep the city more viable. Then there’s that other so-called “budget hawk,” make a loud noise then vote with the status quo/ always suck upto whoever you think you can step over on YOUR own way up (the ambition of these old guys pushing 70 or more!), Dennis Zine.
A bunch of losers who had their day, phonies who say one thing and do another, homeowner group leaders who say that hate all development while demanding more jobs and no new taxes and demanding the cops and social services that more upscale development DONE RIGHT brings in.
Clean Sweep needs truly NEW leaders and thinking. Integrity not Bitter Bernies, failed pols and screaming heads from the right.

I’d love for Ron to address all the points brought up in that post. Otherwise Clean Sweep looks like a vehicle for Riordan to get back in the game, to become relevant again. Hey, Ron, is Riordan paying you a salary or what?

  13. Anonymous says:

You see, already Walter Moore has taken the Clean Sweep campaign off message. Now it’s all about him, his message, illegal immigration, etc. No one is talking about what Clean Sweep wants to achieve.

Here’s a question I’d like answered: I braved the heat of the valley and paid my 20 bucks so HOW COME NONE OF THE CANDIDATES SPOKE?
There were new faces there like Tomas O’Grady who has done some great things in Los Feliz especially at my kids’ schools… and Austin Dragon. Why couldn’t we hear from these guys?

  15. Scott Zwartz says:

Each person is an individual and each person deserves respect based upon his or her own merit. Blaming any group is unacceptable as it treats people not as individual human beings but according to group membership.
Some people hate Jews, other hate Catholics, other think Armenians are terrible, lots of people dislike whites — such thinking denies the individual humanity of each member of the disliked group. In America which was founded to secure the blessing of individual liberty, each person deserves to be treated as an individual.

  16. Anonymous says:

Scott, I blame clueless, naive & brainwashed LA voters for giving us Villar twice. I treat this group as a group, I don’t care who the individual voters are. Yes, I dislike this group intensely, doesn’t mean I deny their individual humanity. They’re just easily brain washed idiots who read the LA Slimes and vote for whoever the slimes endorsed. Your post seems to suggest you may be of similar mindset.
Furthermore I blame the LA politicians for getting the City in this mess. Again I can’t deny their individuality because unfortunately each of them is known by his/her name. But I dislike this group very strongly.
I also dislike illegals as a group. I don’t really care for them as individuals because not only they feel justified in breaking laws, they feel right to gloat about it (demanding citizenship, everything in spanish, free everything).

Bring back Walter Moore for Mayor! It’s time to clean the streets of illegals. Let’s take back Los Angeles for America!

  18. Anonymous says:

Bravo to Ron and Clean Sweep. I do agree that Walter is a racist. However, there are a number of people who share his view. So, if one were to consider Equal Protection under the law, it would be discrimination not to get feedback/debate from that faction.

  19. Anonymous says:

So 7:18, you’re saying that Clean Sweep should solicit the racist input in formulating their slate?

    E N O U G H!
According to every poll taken since Arizona’s 1070 law passed shows that 75-percent of the American public are against illegal immigration.
Yes, this country was built on the backs of immigrants, but they came here LEGALLY.
I don’t know where you anti-Moore people are coming from, but it’s not a place of logic, facts or common sense. You all sound like a bunch of Tony V’s LaRaza, MENCHA moles.

  22. anonymous@ 7:18 PM says:

7:31, no, that’s not what I am saying. ‘Apologies for not clarifying. While I do think Walter has some racist tendencies, I believe what he has advocated for is enforcement of existing immigration laws. Those that want these laws enforced have been labled racist. Whether or not they are is beside the point. These laws are in place. Those that want these laws enforced have every right to demand that. Others might disagree. Since the laws are in place, it would be wrong to not allow a forum to discuss them. That being said, my understanding is immigration laws might not even be part of the CS platform. Either way, there are enough people out there that share his views that warrant being heard.*
Immigration laws aside, I think Walter has some valid arguments regarding other aspects of the LA political system. My hope is people listen to that and not focus on just his immigration stance or potential agendas. Like Riordan, whose issue is pensions, these are valid concerns that need addressing regardless of his or anyone’s agenda. I recall the LAPD and LAFD pension formula he pushed through was a drop in the bucket compared to the existing problem. That is, Riordan’s creation of Tier 5 in 2001, which was a slight increase in the pension formula for someone retiring at 30 years of service and the potential for a higher pension for someone who chooses to work 33 years, added around 10 million to the multi-billion dollar problem. In addition, I recall watching some news clip where he warned the mayor of this problem in 2005, so it isn’t like he just popped into the picture with this. Regardless of what one thinks of him, the message is valid. And, even if he did contribute to it, I recall hearing him say enough with finger pointing, it’s time to fix the problem. For people to poo poo his message by suggesting he contributed to it (or is seeking more political clout) is the same straw hat reasoning that’s used against Walter’s alleged racists views. JMO
    * Regarding the immigration issue, for the record, I would rather see it be easier to allow immigrants to become legal.

WTF? The LA Clean Sweep hate mongers are trying to deflect the SUCCESS of a great event. Mexican Americans citywide support Arizona and SB 1070. Along with many others here in LA who support Arizona they are blogging on Arizona newspapers saying what a bunch of morons we have as politicians. If a Latino said what Walter did are they racist as many of us think and agree with Walter on immigration? The most racist ones are politicians like the Mayor, Reyes, Alarcon, Huizar, Cardenas who do nothing for their Mexican American constituents but for illegals. Notice the council motions. Anyting giving illegals something for free they pass. Illegals marched 8 times last year and cost the city in a financial crisis over $2 MILLION DOLLARS. They honor people like the Pres. of Mexico who came to US and criticized Arizona. THey honor days for foreigners like the Braceros. Notice the many events taking place inside city hall are TJ. And I’m a Latino

  26. Wake-Up Little Miss Jennerjahn says:

Clean Sweep should welcome all creeds, colors, religions, and sexual orientations.
And because of this, self-hating Phil Jennerjahn needs to come out of the closet instead of acting like Roy Cohn – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Cohn, living a secret gay life.
Now Little Miss Jennerjahn is condemning Joe Barrett for taking a “cheap shot” and Mike Trujillo for playing the race card.
Well Little Miss Jennerjahn is trying to play on religious hatred by accusing (without proof or knowledge) on CD-4 candidate of being part of a particular church.
This is dishonorable and cowardly and does not reflect well on Conservatives or the Log Cabin Republicans. Miss Jennerjahn, you can do better than that.
Religious freedom and freedom from Religious persecution are the foundations of our country and the one of the great gifts given to us by our forefathers.

I observed a very good turn-out….a full house of very concerned residents…..especially for a scorcher of a Saturday.
My comment is; the City of L.A. is not the personal property of the mayor nor his associates to sell-off just to cover for their over-spending of OUR MONEY. What’s next? Sell-off the City employees on the black market?
The impression I get is that the city council and mayor have sold-off their soul’s to the highest bidder.
Thanks Clean Sweep and Co. Count me in, but I’d rather bring a bulldozer.
