Utter Contempt: No Quorum Forces Cancellation of City Council Meeting

Showing their utter contempt for the public, the nation’s highest paid city officials failed to show up for Tuesday’s City Council meeting, forcing its cancellation for lack of a quorum.

Apart from more giveaways to the entertainment industry, the key item on the agenda was ratification of the Community Redevelopment Agency’s decision to reach a formal agreement (CRA) to dismantle itself and reorganize as a non-profit in defiance of Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposal to balance the state budget by abolishing all 400 CRAs statewide.
The LA CRA is trying to keep control of nearly $1 billion that otherwise would be used for schools, parks,libraries, police and fire services that have been sharply slashed because of the city’s budget crisis.

Despite the performance of Council President Eric Garcetti as he chatted merrily with Paul Krekorian seated next to him, it seems pretty clear that talks are going on in back rooms and with legislators on what to do next and the failure of Council members to show up was just another staged action.

State Controller John Chiang’s decision to audit LA’s CRA along with 17 others across the state puts them all on notice that the games they have played with the public’s money are going to be part of the debate.

Unlike some smaller communities that use most of their CRA to actually build decent affordable housing and rebuild their infrastructure, most of LA’s money goes to the drain in subsidies for luxury hotels, condos and entertainment as well as funding for politically connected non-profits that support the City Hall machine.

If LA’s own controller Wendy Greuel wants to stake out her position as a mayoral candidate, she needs to beat Chiang to the punch and expose the scandal at the CRA. Of course, she is a supporter of CRA CEO Chris Essel so don’t expect much, a whitewash at best.

    What a bunch of cowards and bastards. All of a sudden dumb ass Garcetti wants to pretend to be in charge. THey make the public wait during their political presentations but Garcetti stops the meeting at 10:15am instead of waiting another 15 minutes. What a coward!! These low life clowns have proven time and again they don’t belong in office. The community members who showed up today will go back. They will have to face the music eventually. Actions speaking louder then words and the fact these clowns couldn’t even show up for ONE DAMN MEETING knowing the public was going to speak out against CRA shows the incredible corruption amongst them all

    Huizar’s press person Rick Coca told the media he was at the opening of 2 restaurants in Downtown LA and tried to get him there on time. Excuse me but where are his damn priorities. Does he work for the restaurants or the people of CD14.

    I suppose when you live in a world where tin foil hats are needed on a daily basis everything ron kaye writes must make sense.

    Two business decide to hold a press conference to announce they are “opening for business” and they credit the Councilman’s “Bringing Back Broadway” Initiative for this.
    So obviously the councilman is running away from questions, I mean he had to have known how many people wanted to speak off-topic today in Council while celebrating new jobs being created in his Council District.
    As for the poster who wrote at 2:34 where are his priorities — in this case it was his district where these business opened up. Where people will be working, people who might be unemployed now having a decent job.
    Oh and lets not forget the fact that even if the Councilman showed up on time, tsk tsk tsk. Same result occurs because Koretz wasn’t any where near chambers.

    Bringing Back Broadway is a scam populated by Huizar staff and supporters. CRA moneys involved. Hope Chiang does his audit before the elections. This idiot Huizar actually went to the racist city of San Diego with his entourage to learn from the Gas district to do the same here. Hey Huizar, they hate mexicans there. What could he possibly learn from there for one of the most vibrant minority business dominated street in LA that just a few years was statistically found to be the highest rent grosser per sq.ft. in LA. It needed a few tweaks, but that means not enough publicity or moneys for everyone concerned.

  14. Wendy conducting a meaningful audit of the CRA would be like Patt Morrison conducting a hard-hitting interview.

    This is why all LA City Council members in the even Districts (and their “heirs” – CD-12) should be kicked out and replaced with the Clean Sweep candidates.
    Even the ones who showed up. Why them? Because with their 99.997% voting record, they won’t publicly embarrass their colleagues – Rather they will kiss their colleagues ass.
    When a pro ball player has an unexcused abense, he will be fined. At $178,000/yr + Car + Staff + Street Furniture Revenue Funds, there is no excuse.

    It had already been determined that the CRA item was going to be deferred BEFORE they missed the quorum. Garcetti could have EASILY waited for Koretz to come up the elevator. And Wesson was in the parking lot. But with a bunch of the hardest hitting public comment speakers staring at Garcetti and no real big business on the table…time to cut losses and get the hell out of there to avoid what was coming. – The Gadfly

    Spinmeisters, you need to take off your rose-colored glasses.
    You cannot make any excuse for a grown adult who:
    1.Makes over $250,000 a year with pay & benefits;
    2.Only has to show up at City Council meetings about 3 times a week;
    3. Has a professional paid staff with full benefits to schedule events around a 3-day a week Council meeting schedule;
    4. While his/her working class constituents are struggling pay check to pay check;
    5. Make immature excuses, like school children, complaining about be stuck in traffic (take public transportation buddy, like the rest of us) or an elevator instead of being a grown up and showing up early;
    6. Instead, those who did show up, laugh it off just like Garcetti and Krekorian in the video above instead of having the guts to punish their buddies (that’s why Krekorian and Parks must go too);
    7. Are never late for fund raisers or meetings with Millionaire and Billionaire developers.
